Reading activities to try with children on book week
On book week, I always give kids a reason to read; for example, reading is my secret power costumes. You can make this year’s theme to be all about reading. You can remind your kids of the present, future and past of children’s literature. Our reading activities will help you instil a love of reading in your kids as you teach them key literacy skills.
Story cheeseburgers
With this literature activity, you can teach your students all about the structure of a story. Once they have put together their story cheeseburger, you can let them color it and put it on the wall of the class.
Finish the comic activity
You can try visiting the official Kid’s Book Week website to find comics that are printable with space for children to finish the story. Your kids can create tales about mad scientists, scary space bugs or mystery-solving group of babysitter sleuths.
Fictional postcards
Wearing book week costumes to mimic your favorite book week characters is not the only way you can show your love to a favorite character. You may want to send your favorite character a letter. You can use a fun reading activity to encourage the kids to use their imagination to write, decorate and send postcards to their favorite characters. This will enhance their creativity.
Reading around the world
If you love adventure, you can take children to different parts of the world and encourage them to read. You can provide your students with a mountain and a map and help them read books from different continents. You can also gift or get them Reading is my secret power costumes.
Letter to the author
Writing and sending a letter to the author is one of the ways I encourage children to read. You can use such educational activities to help children email an author and they may be lucky to get a response.
